HYPROMALATE® Hypromellose Phthalate

HYPROMALATE® Hypromellose Phthalate

HYPROMALATE®Hypromellose Phthalate (HPMCP) is a pharmaceutical-grade cellulosebased enteric coating polymer widely used in oral solid dosage formulations. It is a partially esterified derivative of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) with phthalyl groups, providing pHdependent solubility characteristics essential for enteric protection. HPMCP remains insoluble in acidic gastric conditions and dissolves at higher intestinal pH, enabling site-specific drug release in the intestine

Overview

HYPROMALATE®Hypromellose Phthalate (HPMCP) is a pH-sensitive enteric polymer designed to provide site-specific drug release based on gastrointestinal pH conditions. Due to the presence of phthalyl groups in its structure, HPMCP remains insoluble in the acidic gastric environment (approximately pH 1–3), allowing the coated dosage form to protect the drug during stomach transit.

As the dosage form moves into the intestine, where the pH gradually increases, HPMCP begins to ionize and dissolve, enabling controlled drug release. Depending on the grade and degree of phthalyl substitution, HPMCP typically exhibits dissolution behavior around pH 5.0–5.5 and above, making it suitable for intestinal-targeted delivery
